Pierre Jeanneret & Eulie Chowdury, a "Library Chair" in teak for Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health, Chandigarh (1960s)
This "Library Chair," designed by Pierre Jeanneret and Eulie Chowdury around 1959-60, is made from teak with heavily patinated wooden structures. Originally intended for the Library of the University of Punjab, Chandigarh, the chair features a seat re-woven with cane. It is marked RCCH, indicating its origin from the Royal College of Pediatrics and Child Health, Chandigarh (1960s). Dimensions: W48 D46 H75 cm.
Eulie Chowdury is recognized as one of the earliest female architects and furniture designers in Asia. Fluent in French, she facilitated communication between Pierre Jeanneret and the Indian employees in the architecture department. She later became the first female chief architect of Chandigarh, overseeing the second phase of city planning from 1971 to 1976. This wooden chair is an adaptation of a design originally created by Pierre Jeanneret.
